چکیده

We present a variational estimation method for the mixed logistic regression model. The method is based on a lower bound approximation of the logistic function (Jaakkola and Jordan, 2000). Based on the approximation, an EM algorithm can be derived that results in a considerable simplification of the maximization problem in that it does not require the numerical evaluation of integrals over the random effects. We assess the performance of the variational method for the mixed logistic regression model in a simulation study, and compare it to Laplace’s method. The results indicate that the variational method is a viable choice for estimating the fixed effects of the mixed logistic regression model under the condition that the number of outcomes within each cluster is sufficiently high.

Factors Influencing Drug Injection History among Prisoners: A Comparison between Classification and Regression Trees and Logistic Regression Analysis

Background: Due to the importance of medical studies, researchers of this field should be familiar with various types of statistical analyses to select the most appropriate method based on the characteristics of their data sets. Classification and regression trees (CARTs) can be as complementary to regression models. We compared the performance of a logistic regression model and a CART in predi...

Prediction of unwanted pregnancies using logistic regression, probit regression and discriminant analysis

Background: Unwanted pregnancy not intended by at least one of the parents has undesirable consequences for the family and the society. In the present study, three classification models were used and compared to predict unwanted pregnancies in an urban population.   Methods : In this cross-sectional study, 887 pregnant mothers referring to health centers in Khorramabad, Iran, in 2012 were ...

Determining the factors related to diabetes type II with mixed logistic regression

Background and aims: Diabetes type II (non-insulin dependent) which is one of the most prevalent diabetes types in the world emerges in people with the age of above 55 and genetic and environmental factors interfere in this disease. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting diabetes type II with generalized mixed linear model. Methods: ...

Variational inference for large-scale models of discrete choice

Discrete choice models are commonly used by applied statisticians in numerous fields, such as marketing, economics, finance, and operations research. When agents in discrete choice models are assumed to have differing preferences, exact inference is often intractable. Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques make approximate inference possible, but the computational cost is prohibitive on the large ...
